Playing sport in 40+°C? This is the possibility for teams taking part in the Football Cup in Qatar in 2022. This may be vaguely possible for teams from warmer countries but for those teams from Northern Europe, it could be a real challenge and that’s without mentioning the health risks.
The Qatar team removed this potential challenge to their bid by promising to air condition their stadiums using solar and renewable energy. Khalifa Stadium has been refurbished and includes technology that will provide air-conditioning for fans. Chilled water is piped into the stadium from a cooling centre about one kilometre way. Once it arrives, cold air is blasted out into the stadium through around 500 jet nozzles, keeping temperatures around 23C for fans. Dr Saud Ghani from Qatar University who designed the system believes it will use up to 40 per cent less energy than other cooling methods.
Macair is following the development of this technology keenly. We recently designed an air conditioning system for for a sustainable and low carbon footprint housing project known as Project Etopia. By enhancing the latest HVAC technologies and embracing renewable energy generation, Macair has developed efficient and sustainable air con and ventilation to help people live more healthily without harming the environment. The new stadiums in Qatar may well be the future for us in the UK too.
